# FDA Outlines Biosimilar Educational Outreach

FDA is increasing its educational outreach to decrease public hesitancy with biosimilar usage which may be caused by lack of experience with the products or a lack of understanding of what biosimilars are and how the agency reviews and approves them.

CDER Office of Therapeutic Biologics and Biosimilars (OTBB) has created resources to promote understanding of biosimilars, as outlined in FDA’s [Biosimilars Action Plan](https://www.fda.gov/media/114574/download?attachment&ref=fdaweb.com), according to an [online post](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/our-perspective/education-efforts-help-increase-biosimilar-understanding-and-acceptance?ref=fdaweb.com). For example, patients seeking biosimilars information can access the [Biosimilar Basics for Patients](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/biosimilars/biosimilar-basics-patients?ref=fdaweb.com) page on CDER’s [biosimilar information Web site](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/therapeutic-biologics-applications-bla/biosimilars?ref=fdaweb.com). “From there, patients can navigate to the [Multimedia Education Materials for Patients](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/biosimilars/multimedia-education-materials-biosimilars?ref=fdaweb.com#For%20Patients) page to explore fact sheets, infographics, and videos on biosimilars,” the Center says. “Multimedia resources are valuable learning tools, as studies have shown them to be more effective than text alone, and they can appeal to a greater number of learners.”

For healthcare professionals, CDER has built a [basic information page ](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/biosimilars/overview-health-care-professionals?ref=fdaweb.com)that focuses on more in-depth scientific information to assist them in making prescribing decisions. There is also a link to [multimedia resources](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/biosimilars/multimedia-education-materials-biosimilars?ref=fdaweb.com#For%20Health%20Care%20Providers) created for health care professionals with fact sheets, infographics, videos, and other educational resources to address common prescriber concerns.

FDA continues to approve more biosimilars each year (except during the pandemic in 2020) since the first approval in 2015\. “The number is expected to grow as exclusivity ends for more reference products,” the post says. “Keeping pace with this growth, OTBB has already planned new education materials for 2024, including increased social media outreach about biosimilars and committed to post weekly across various channels (X/Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram).”
