FDA Panel Backs OTC Switch for Acne Drug

FDA’s Nonprescription Drugs Advisory Committee has unanimously (12 to 0) voted to support approval for a Galderma Labs application seeking over-the-counter marketing of Differin (adapalene gel 0.1%) for treating acne in consumers ages 12 years and older. Some panel members said that a proposed Drug Facts label should include a warning about its use in pregnant woman. But other members said such a warning was unnecessary and could cause alarm and confusion. Panel members also said the label should include a precaution for the drug’s use in nursing women to avoid children having contact with the areas where the product has been applied.
