FDA Payroll Glitch Delays Pay for Some Exempt Staff

A payroll system error has delayed paychecks for some FDA employees who are designated to continue working during the ongoing government shutdown, according to reporting from Federal News Network.

Shutdown-exempt staff at FDA are typically paid on time using carryover funds. However, HHS spokesperson Emily Hilliard told the media outlet that a “glitch in the furlough system activated to deal with the Democrat-led shutdown” caused paycheck delays for a limited number of employees. The agency has not specified when affected workers will receive their corrected pay.

An FDA employee told the outlet that some timecards were mistakenly changed to furlough status, and that administrative staff attempted to correct them before payroll was processed. As a result, some employees reportedly received partial pay, while others received no pay at all.

The vast majority of the FDA workforce continues to report for duty during the shutdown. The agency’s contingency plan shows that roughly 10,700 employees, or 66% of staff, are exempt and expected to be paid during the funding lapse.
