# FDA Pilots Online Opioid Enforcement Route

FDA and the U.S. Commerce Department’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) have begun a [120-day pilot](https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/federal-government-announces-new-pilot-program-help-stop-illegal-availability-unapproved-opioids?ref=fdaweb.com) to help reduce unapproved opioids illegally offered for sale online. Under the pilot, the agency will notify internet registries that are participating in the pilot – Neustar, Verisign and Public Interest Registry – when a Warning Letter was issued to a Web site operator and no adequate response was received within the required timeframe. “The internet registries will review FDA’s notifications and assess whether to take further voluntary action, including possible domain name suspensions or blocks,” the agency says. At the end of the pilot, the agencies will analyze its effectiveness as a potential solution to dealing with illegal opioids online.
