FDA Posts Medtronic Endotracheal Tube Update

FDA has posted a Medtronic customer letter with updated information for use, new training material, and unique device identifier information for its NIM CONTACT Reinforced EMG (electromyogram) Endotracheal Tube and NIM Standard Reinforced EMG Endotracheal Tube. The post says the updates include information on what to do when airway obstruction has occurred.

A 4/27/2022 post said FDA was evaluating the potential risk of airway obstruction when using silicone-based EMG endotracheal tubes. “FDA has received reports describing serious adverse events and deaths for these devices after airway obstruction and ventilation failure,” the post said. “If the tube does not ventilate properly, patients may suffer oxygen deprivation, brain damage, or death.”
