# FDA Promoting Advanced and Smart Manufacturing

FDA says the Covid-19 pandemic has reinforced the need to adopt and accelerate the implementation of ways to increase critical supplies and supply chain resilience. An online *Advanced Manufacturing* [update](https://www.fda.gov/emergency-preparedness-and-response/mcm-issues/advanced-manufacturing?ref=fdaweb.com) says advanced and smart manufacturing technologies have been identified as potential ways to meet the needs.

The update cites an FDA-funded study, “Analysis of the Advantages of and Barriers to Adoption of Smart Manufacturing for Medical Products,” that was meant to increase the agency’s understanding of factors that affect a manufacturer’s decision to invest in and adopt digital technologies by identifying both perceived and demonstrated barriers.

The project team from two consultants evaluated nine manufacturers, interviewed representatives, collated the responses, and created a perspective that FDA says will allow it to assess areas where it can foster greater manufacturing resilience.

The report says the pandemic revealed that existing manufacturing structures, with a small number of facilities fed by long and complex supply chains, can be disrupted, elevating risk and creating shortages in the U.S. “FDA and industry have a responsibility to accelerate the adoption of advanced and smart manufacturing technologies to strengthen the nation’s public health infrastructure,” the report says.
