FDA Reminds on Endotracheal Tube Obstructions
CDRH is updating a 4/27 letter to health care providers to ensure those in operating room settings are aware of a Medtronic recall of its NIM Contact Reinforced EMG Endotracheal Tubes and NIM Standard Reinforced EMG Endotracheal Tubes due to the risk of airway obstructions. “If the tube obstructs and does not ventilate properly, patients may suffer oxygen deprivation, brain damage, or death,” the agency update says. Medtronic has also issued a customer letter and is working to update and provide new device instructions for use. Additionally, FDA recently issued a Class 1 recall notification on the devices, and says it will continue to monitor reports of airway obstruction and ventilation failures.
