FDA Reminds Surgical Staffs About Fire Risk

FDA is reminding healthcare professionals involved in surgical procedures about the risk of surgical fires on or near patients. The agency safety notice includes recommended practices to reduce fires from occurring, including the safe use of medical devices and products commonly used during surgical procedures.

The notice says that although such fires are preventable, FDA continues to receive reports about such events that can result in patient burns and other serious injuries, disfigurement, and death. It says that surgical fires can occur when these three elements are present — an oxidizer, an ignition source, and a fuel source.
