FDA Reports on State of Pharmaceutical Quality

FDA says the number of surveillance inspections of human drug manufacturing sites tripled from FY 2021 to FY 2022. The agency’s FY 2022 Report on the State of Pharmaceutical Quality says CDER’s site catalog lists over 4,800 manufacturing sites, with over 40% in the U.S.

While nearly 90% of essential medicines, medical countermeasures, and critical inputs products have at least one domestic finished dosage form manufacturer, the report says, 52% of essential medicine products are completely reliant on foreign sites for active pharmaceutical ingredient manufacturing.

The report also has information on import alerts, recalls, and Warning Letters; sampling and testing; and commitment to quality.
