# FDA Revamps Minor Species Reg for Animal Drugs

FDA 8/23 announced a “direct final rule” intended to ensure that antimicrobial drugs used in animal feed remain available for therapeutic purposes in food-producing [minor species](http://www.fda.gov/AnimalVeterinary/DevelopmentApprovalProcess/MinorUseMinorSpecies/default.htm?ref=fdaweb.com) after manufacturers have removed production (“growth promotion” or “feed efficiency”) claims from their labeling, as all have agreed to do.

The [announcement](http://www.fda.gov/AnimalVeterinary/NewsEvents/CVMUpdates/ucm517671.htm?source=govdelivery&utm%5Fmedium=email&utm%5Fsource=govdelivery) says the FDA-industry agreement will bring the remaining therapeutic uses of these products under the oversight of a veterinarian by the end of December.

FDA says it is seeking public comment on this direct final rule for 75 days following publication in the *Federal Register*. If no significant adverse comments are received, the rule will take effect 135 days following publication.
