FDA Revamps Minor Species Reg for Animal Drugs

FDA 8/23 announced a “direct final rule” intended to ensure that antimicrobial drugs used in animal feed remain available for therapeutic purposes in food-producing minor species after manufacturers have removed production (“growth promotion” or “feed efficiency”) claims from their labeling, as all have agreed to do.

The announcement says the FDA-industry agreement will bring the remaining therapeutic uses of these products under the oversight of a veterinarian by the end of December.

FDA says it is seeking public comment on this direct final rule for 75 days following publication in the Federal Register. If no significant adverse comments are received, the rule will take effect 135 days following publication.
