FDA: Some Patients Should Not Use Fluoroquinolones

FDA says that the serious side effects associated with fluoroquinolone antibiotics generally outweigh the benefits for patients with sinusitis, bronchitis, and uncomplicated urinary tract infections who have other treatment options. An agency drug safety communication says that an FDA safety review found that when fluoroquinolones are used systemically, they are associated with disabling and potentially permanent serious side effects that can occur together. The side effects can involve the tendons, muscles, joints, nerves, and central nervous system, the notice says.

The agency is ordering updates to fluoroquinolone labeling and Medication Guides to reflect the new safety information and says it will continue to investigate safety issues with the drugs.
