FDA States Plan B One-Step Does Not Cause an Abortion

FDA has revised its information sheet for the Plan B One-Step (1.5 mg levonorgestrel) emergency contraceptive to clarify that the product does not cause an abortion. The revision says that “Plan B One-Step will not work if a person is already pregnant, meaning it will not affect an existing pregnancy.”

The notice says that the product prevents pregnancy by acting on ovulation, which occurs before implantation. “Evidence does not support that the drug affects implantation or maintenance of a pregnancy after implantation,” it says. “Therefore, it does not terminate a pregnancy.”
