FDA Testing Results Posted on NDMA in Metformin

FDA has posted laboratory results showing N-Nitroso dimethylamine (NDMA) levels in some metformin products approved in the U.S. The testing, which is part of FDA’s ongoing investigation into NDMA impurities in certain drug products, showed that metforminֺ products range from “not detectable to low levels.” To date, no sample of metformin exceeded the acceptable daily intake for NDMA, and therefore not recalls have been ordered in the U.S. Metformin is used to control high blood sugar in patients with Type 2 diabetes.

FDA says it will post the methods used in its laboratory testing in the near future. The agency is also collaborating with international regulators to share testing results for metformin and other drugs.
