FDA to Study Breast Implant Risk Perception

FDA says it has contracted with Research Triangle Institute International to study how patients weigh the benefits and risks associated with smooth and textured breast implants. An agency announcement says CDRH believes the survey results will help assess whether patients’ perception of the risk of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma associated with textured breast implants is influenced by information about the potential benefits of the textured implants.

The insights gained through this patient-centered approach will help incorporate patient preferences in CDRH's regulatory decision-making, the notice says. CDRH says it plans to publish the results of this study later this year.
