The CDER Office of Prescription Drug Promotion (OPDP) plans to study the promotion of prescription drugs in a talk show format. A *Federal Register* [notice](ttps://public-inspection.federalregister.gov/2024-22575.pdf) says the research will look at advertising features through what is known as “native advertising,” a form of advertisement where marketers present paid content in a format designed to look and feel like the surrounding media format and content in which it appears.

“The objective of this research is to conduct experimental studies to examine issues related to endorsers in direct-to-consumer prescription drug promotion that occurs within a talk show format,” OPDP says.

The notice reports that FDA has recently issued compliance letters to drug companies for misleading promotion of prescription drug products within talk show formats.

The study will investigate a native advertisement for a fictitious prescription drug for Type 2 diabetes embedded in a health-themed television talk show. It will examine the impacts of three independent variables: sponsorship prominence, endorser type, and risk prominence on the recall and comprehension of risks and benefits depicted in the ad, perceptions of endorsed characteristics, perceptions of drug qualities, and behavioral intentions.
