FDA Updates Warning on UV Wands

FDA has updated its list of ultraviolet (UV) wand products that may present a potential risk of injury. Last year, the agency issued a safety warning about the use of certain brands of UV wands because the devices may expose users and any nearby people to unsafe levels of ultraviolet-C radiation. The warning says that such exposure may cause injury to the skin and eyes after a few seconds of use.

The agency says that it is aware that some manufacturers are marketing the UV wands to consumers to disinfect surfaces and kill germs in the home or similar spaces outside most health care settings. It recommends that consumers not use these products and instead consider using safer alternative methods.
