# FDA Wants Comments on Opioid Disposal Proposal

FDA will accept comments for 60 days to a new public [docket](https://www.federalregister.gov/public-inspection/2022-08372/providing-mail-back-envelopes-and-education-on-safe-disposal-with-opioid-analgesics-dispensed-in-an?ref=fdaweb.com) established on a potential modification to the Opioid Analgesic Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy to require that mail-back envelopes be dispensed and education on safe disposal provided with opioid analgesics dispensed in an outpatient setting. In a [statement](4-12-22%20cyber.docx), the agency says patients “commonly report having unused analgesics following surgical procedures, thereby creating opportunities for nonmedical use, accidental exposure, overdose, and potentially increasing new cases of opioid addiction.”

The statement lists these benefits for mail-back envelopes: 

- they do not require patients to mix medications with water, chemicals, or other substances; and
- opioids returned to the Drug Enforcement Administration registered facilities do not enter the water supply and landfills since they are incinerated.

FDA says the return envelopes would be postage-paid.
