FDA Warns Makers of Illegal Animal Antimicrobials

FDA has sent Warning Letters to nine manufacturers and distributors of unapproved and misbranded antimicrobial animal drugs. An agency statement says FDA is concerned because the products contain antimicrobials that are important in human medicine. Using them without medical oversight contributes to the development of antimicrobial resistance, it says.

The products are not the subject of a New Animal Drug Application, FDA says, and thus the agency has not verified their safety or effectiveness as part of the animal drug review process or facility inspections.

The letters went to American Aquarium Products, Aquanest Biotic, Aquarium Pharmacy LLC, California Veterinary Supply, Chewy Inc., Kraft Drug, Midland Veterinary Services LLC, Silver Lease LLC, and Valley Veterinary Clinic LTD. They were told to respond with an explanation of how they will address the violations.
