FDA Warns on Hemodialysis Bloodline Shortage

FDA is warning healthcare professionals about supply interruptions involving hemodialysis bloodlines because of recent supplier issues. “The disruption in supply of this device is expected to impact patient care and as such may require adjustments to the clinical management of patients receiving acute or chronic hemodialysis,” an agency notice says. FDA expects the shortage to impact supply availability through early fall.

The agency notes that the supply issues were compounded by a B. Braun production issues reported back in January. The company issued a customer letter detailing available market alternatives for its products. 

FDA recommends health care providers experiencing interruptions or shortages in supply of hemodialysis bloodlines develop strategies to conserve their use. “Providers should use their clinical judgment when developing and implementing conservation strategies,” the notice says.
