# FDA Working with CBP to Identify Illicit Vaping Products

Following a visit to two international mail facilities (IMF), FDA acting commissioner **Ned Sharpless** says the agency is collaborating with Customs and Border Patrol agents to identify potentially illicit vaping products. Sharpless notes there have been more than 1,000 reports of lung injuries associated with vaping use.

In an *FDA in Brief* [report](http://s2027422842.t.en25.com/e/es?s=2027422842&e=263202&elqTrackId=376c7bc788024cd5a73d955f2e3dcbdc&elq=74e5f06be2f747bb9f1317a042eb9ee1&elqaid=9824&elqat=1&ref=fdaweb.com), Sharpless praised agency staff working in nine IMFs across the country and thanked Congress for new authorities and resources that enabled FDA to expand its presence at IMF facilities nationwide, resulting in more rapid, on-site scientific support, increased staffing, and improved work facilities.

According to Sharpless, since the new authorities took effect 5/2017, FDA has exercised its administrative destruction authority at the John F. Kennedy International Airport IMF to destroy more than 3.7 million capsules/tablets, weighing 16.58 tons, of illicit and potentially dangerous drugs.
