Fecal Microbiota for Transplantation Safety Alert

FDA has issued a safety alert telling healthcare providers and patients about the potential risk of transmitting the SARS-CoV-2 virus by using fecal microbiota for transplantation. FDA says that it has determined that additional safety protections are needed.

The alert says that several recent studies have documented the presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA and/or SARS-CoV-2 virus in the stool of affected individuals, suggesting that the virus may be transmitted by fecal microbiota transplantation, although the risk of such transmission is unknown. The alert contains recommendations for healthcare providers and patients.
