Firms Recall Valsartan-containing Products Due to Impurity

FDA says several companies have recalled their valsartan-containing drug products, which are used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure, due to an impurity detected in the active ingredient. The impurity, N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), is classified as a probable human carcinogen based on results from laboratory tests. The presence of NDMA was unexpected and is thought to be related to changes in the way the active substance was manufactured, an FDA release says. Companies that recalled products include Major Pharmaceuticals, Solco Healthcare and Teva Pharmaceuticals. The manufacturer of the active ingredient was disclosed in a related recall notice from Solco as being Zhejiang Huahai Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd.
