# Former McKinsey Partner Sentenced for Purdue Work

Former McKinsey & Company senior partner **Martin Elling** has been sentenced to six months in federal prison for obstructing justice related to his work on Purdue Pharma matters. A Department of Justice [statement](https://www.justice.gov/usao-wdva/pr/former-senior-partner-mckinsey-company-sentenced?ref=fdaweb.com) says a 1/2025 information charged Elling with knowingly destroying records with the intent to impede, obstruct, and influence the investigation and proper administration of a matter within the Justice Department’s jurisdiction. He also was fined $40,000 and ordered to serve two years of supervised release following his incarceration which includes a requirement for 1,000 hours of community service.

The statement says that in 2013, Purdue engaged McKinsey to recover lost OxyContin sales. Elling was director of the client services team for about 30 of McKinsey’s engagements with Purdue, the department says. The consulting firm agreed in 2024 to pay $650 million to resolve civil and criminal investigations into its work with opioid manufacturers including Purdue.
