# Fresenius Pays $231 Million to Resolve ‘Corrupt Schemes’

Fresenius Medical Care has agreed to pay $231 million to resolve investigations by the Department of Justice (DoJ) and the Securities and Exchange Commission into violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act related to its activities in various alleged corrupt schemes to obtain business in multiple foreign countries.

According to the government, Fresenius has admitted to paying bribes to publicly employed health or government officials to obtain or retain business in Angola and Saudi Arabia. “Fresenius doled out millions of dollars in bribes across the globe to gain a competitive advantage in the medical services industry, profiting to the tune of over $140 million,” a[ DoJ release](https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/fresenius-medical-care-agrees-pay-231-million-criminal-penalties-and-disgorgement-resolve?ref=fdaweb.com) says.

To resolve the case, Fresenius entered into a nonprosecution agreement DoJ. As part of the agreement, Fresenius also agreed to continue to cooperate with the department’s investigation, enhance its compliance program, implement rigorous internal controls and retain an independent corporate compliance monitor for at least two years.
