Fujifilm Medical Removing Older Duodenoscopes from Market

FDA says Fujifilm Medical Systems has decided to remove from the market older-model (250/450) duodenoscopes based on the limited number currently in use. Fuji will replace them with the ED-530XT model, in addition to necessary accessories (i.e. brushes) at no cost, a safety alert says.

The validated manual reprocessing procedures for the ED-530XT outlined in December 2015 remain the same, FDA says. “The validated reprocessing instructions when followed correctly, are intended to effectively clean and high-level disinfect the Fuji ED-530XT duodenoscope,” it says.

In 2013, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention alerted FDA to a potential association between multi-drug resistant bacteria and duodenoscopes. Upon further investigation, it became clear that these cases of infection were occurring despite confirmation that the users were following proper manufacturer cleaning and disinfection or sterilization instructions. Since then, numerous manufacturers have revised their cleaning/disinfection procedures.
