GAO on More Drug Development Machine Learning

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has laid out six policy options in response to challenges it says hinder the adoption and impact of machine learning in drug development. The options are in a GAO report on artificial intelligence in health care undertaken in response to a congressional request.

The report says that machine learning could accelerate drug development and cites examples of machine learning in drug discovery, preclinical research, and clinical trials.

GAO says that five of its six policy options are centered around research, data access, standardization, human capital, and regulatory certainty. The sixth option is the status quo, in which federal agencies, state and local governments, academic and research institutions and industry would not intervene with current efforts.
