# Generic Drug Savings $8.8 Billion in 2017: FDA

The CDER Office of Generic Drugs says the 843 fully approved and 184 tentatively approved generic drug applications in 2017 had an estimated cost-savings of $8.8 billion through 12/2017 and $11.8 billion through 2/2018\. A cost savings [report](https://www.fda.gov/downloads/Drugs/ResourcesForYou/Consumers/BuyingUsingMedicineSafely/GenericDrugs/UCM609808.pdf?ref=fdaweb.com) says the agency approved the most generic drugs ever in 2017, and estimates total cost-savings over one full year after each generic approval in 2017 to be $16.0 billion.
