# Gottlieb Says FDA Working Daily on Puerto Rico Manufacturing Capacity

FDA continues working with Puerto Rico-based manufacturing facilities to restore their capacity in order to prevent possible medical product shortages, according to an [update](https://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/ucm579493.htm?ref=fdaweb.com) by commissioner **Scott Gottlieb**. “These facilities are a key component of the island’s economic vigor,” he said. “The pharmaceutical and biological drug products and medical devices produced on the island account for about 30% of Puerto Rico’s gross domestic product. Moreover, about 80% of the drug products manufactured on the island are consumed by U.S. citizens in Puerto Rico and across all 50 states.”

Gottlieb said that many manufacturing facilities, but not all, are currently running on generator power and could be off the electrical grid for months. “Moreover, most of the facilities that we know of, that have resumed production, maintain only partial operations,” he said. “New shortages could result from these disruptions and shortages that existed before the storms could potentially be extended. We’ve been in touch with all the firms. In the case of products we’re most concerned about, FDA leadership is in contact with senior management teams.”

The critical product list comprises about 40 pharmaceutical and biological drug products, Gottlieb said, and daily communication with some companies continues. He said the agency has had to intervene over the last two weeks to help firms secure fuel to maintain production lines, get clearance to move logistical support into the island or finished goods to their recipients.
