Gottlieb Wants More FDA Staff at International Mail Facilities

FDA commissioner Scott Gottlieb says he wants more agency investigators at international mail facilities to help intercept illegal drug shipments, particularly opioids disguised as other drugs and dietary supplements. Speaking to an Associated Press reporter 3/6, Gottlieb said he wants to more than double the number of packages his agency inspects at such facilities.

International shipments from countries like China are growing so fast that government officials are struggling to keep up. International shipments processed by the postal service nearly doubled in just three years — from 275 million in 2016 from 150 million in 2013, the AP report says. Gottlieb wants enough staff to inspect 100,000 packages per year that have been flagged as suspicious by customs agents, up from the current 40,000, it says.
