FDA has issued a final guidance outlining the identity and safety information manufacturers and distributors should include in new dietary ingredient notifications (NDINs) for dietary supplements.

The guidance,“[New Dietary Ingredient (NDI) Notifications and Related Issues; Identity and Safety Information About the NDI](https://www.fda.gov/regulatory-information/search-fda-guidance-documents/guidance-industry-new-dietary-ingredient-ndi-notifications-and-related-issues-identity-and-safety?ref=fdaweb.com),” finalizes three sections of a 2016 revised draft, addressing ingredient identification, historical use or other evidence of safety, and the basis for concluding that an ingredient is reasonably expected to be safe.

The agency said the recommendations are intended to improve submissions under the NDIN process, which provides FDA its only opportunity to evaluate the safety of new dietary ingredients before they reach consumers.

FDA plans to finalize additional sections of the 2016 draft guidance. Comments on the final guidance may be submitted at any time under docket FDA-2025-D-6501.
