Guide on ALS Drug Development

FDA has issued a final guidance entitled Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: Developing Drugs for Treatment. The document provides FDA’s current scientific thinking so that, it says, effective treatments with a favorable benefit to risk profile can be most efficiently developed, studied and ultimately made available to patients. It was developed as part of a collaboration among experts across the agency and incorporates input from patients, researchers and advocates.

The guidance includes recommendations on clinical trial design and ways to measure effectiveness. It recommends that researchers and companies interact with FDA early in product development so that it can best advise on proposed development programs and the efficient trial designs to produce data needed for FDA approval.
