# Guide on Temporary Pharmacy Compounding

FDA has released a [guidance](https://www.fda.gov/media/137125/download?ref=fdaweb.com) on “Temporary Policy for Compounding of Certain Drugs for Hospitalized Patients by Pharmacy Compounders not Registered as Outsourcing Facilities During the Covid-19 Public Health Emergency.” The agency says the policy is intended to help address reports related to increased demand and supply interruptions involving FDA-approved drug products used in treating hospitalized patients with Covid-19\. Many of the drugs are needed to support patients who have been intubated, or for other procedures involved in the care of such patients. FDA says it does not intend to take action against a pharmacy for compounding a drug that is essentially a copy of a commercially available drug, or for providing a drug to a hospital without obtaining a patient-specific prescription, if all criteria are met in the policy. The criteria include the need for the compounded drug product to appear on a list in the appendix of drugs used for hospitalized patients with Covid-19 and for it to be provided directly to a hospital, among other requirements.
