Guide on Viral Transport Media Enforcement

FDA has posted a final guidance entitled “Enforcement Policy for Viral Transport Media During the Coronavirus Disease 2019 Public Health Emergency.” The document is intended to help with the availability of devices for use in transporting certain clinical specimens, including transport media that can be used for certain clinical specimens used with molecular reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction Covid-19 assays or antigen-detection diagnostic assays. For example, the document says the agency does not intend to object to the distribution and use of transport media by commercial manufacturers during the pandemic. It notes that the transport media device should be validated and the manufacturer should include a statement that the transport medium has not been reviewed by FDA.
