# Gupta Raises Concerns About Overton’s Independence, Ideology

FDA commissioner nominee **Heidi Overton’s** responses on vaccines, contraception and abortion medication during her 9/24 Senate confirmation hearing raise concerns that ideology could influence her decision-making if she takes over the agency, MSNBC senior medical analyst **Dr. Vin Gupta** said Friday.

Gupta was particularly critical of Overton’s refusal to say whether president **Donald Trump** was wrong when he previously questioned the safety of the combined measles, mumps and rubella vaccine, even though Overton unequivocally endorsed the vaccine during Thursday’s Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee hearing.

“That was just one example of Overton’s ideology overriding evidence,” Gupta said during an [MSNBC discussion](https://youtu.be/LuEvdt24Rxg?si=0TGauGSNifL6OQRZ&ref=fdaweb.com) of the hearing.

He also pointed to Overton’s involvement in administration policy favoring separate measles, mumps and rubella vaccinations and her responses to questions about intrauterine devices and the abortion drug mifepristone. “She is ideological across the spectrum,” Gupta said, adding that he does not believe she is qualified to lead FDA as a result.

Gupta argued that Overton’s answers were especially notable given her involvement in the administration’s vaccine policies. Overton currently serves as a White House health policy adviser and participated in development of the administration’s executive order calling for changes to the childhood vaccination schedule.

Gupta also criticized Overton’s exchange with Sen. **Patty Murray** (D-WA), who questioned the nominee about whether an intrauterine device constitutes a form of abortion. Overton did not directly characterize IUDs in response to Murray’s questioning. Gupta said the issue should not be ambiguous because an IUD is a contraceptive used to prevent pregnancy.

He also raised concerns about Overton’s views regarding mifepristone and its availability through the mail. Overton told senators during the hearing that, under FDA’s current regulatory determination, mifepristone is “safe and effective as labeled today” with the applicable risk-management requirements. FDA is conducting another review of the drug’s safety.
