HeartWare Ventricular Assist Device Battery Charger Recall

HeartWare has recalled (Class 1) its Ventricular Assist Device (HVAD) system battery charger due to the potential for the charger to be mistakenly inserted into the device’s controller power port. The HVAD is indicated for hemodynamic support in patients with advanced, refractory left ventricular heart failure; either as a bridge to cardiac transplantation, myocardial recovery, or as destination therapy in patients for whom subsequent transplantation is not planned.

If the charger is accidentally plugged into the controller port, communication circuits between the battery and the controller may be damaged, a recall notice says. If circuit damage occurs, it will be necessary to exchange the controller to restore communication between the batteries and controller, the notice says.
