FDA has approved a Heron Therapeutics NDA for Aponvie (aprepitant) injectable emulsion, indicated for preventing postoperative nausea and vomiting in adults. The drug is intended to be administered via a single 30-second intravenous injection, and maintains therapeutic plasma concentrations for at least 48 hours, the company says.

Approval was based on data showing aprepitant was more effective than ondansetron (GlaxoSmithKline’s Zofran) in preventing vomiting, Heron says. “Treatment with aprepitant resulted in approximately 50% fewer patients vomiting in the first 24 and 48 hours compared to ondansetron,” it says.
