HHS General Counsel Shultz Resigning

HHS general counsel Bill Schultz has announced his resignation from the department. Before joining HHS, he was a partner at Zuckerman Spaeder. Schultz has also previously served as Department of Justice deputy assistant attorney general, and FDA deputy commissioner for policy. Before joining FDA, he served as counsel to the Subcommittee on Health and the Environment, Committee on Energy and Commerce, and the House of Representatives, where he worked on health care, FDA issues, tobacco and trade legislation.

Schultz will be leaving the department on 5/26, and deputy general counsel Peggy Dotzel has agreed to become acting general counsel.

At HHS, Schultz played a leadership role in guiding the Affordable Care Act’s implementation Additionally, he oversaw numerous legal challenges to important administration initiatives, including two significant challenges to the Affordable Care Act that have ended up with Supreme Court decisions in favor of the administration.
