# Hospital Group Seeks FDA Actions in IV Solution Shortages

The American Hospital Association is asking the Biden Administration to require FDA to take “immediate actions to increase the supply of intravenous (IV) solutions” in the wake of product shortages caused by Hurricane Helene, particularly the closure of Baxter’s manufacturing plant in Marion, NC. The facility is a key IV solution supplier “producing approximately 60% — or 1.5 million bags — of the IV solutions used every day in the U.S,” the group says.

In a [10/7 letter](https://www.aha.org/2024-10-07-aha-president-urging-administration-take-immediate-action-address-iv-solution-supply-shortage-result-helene?ref=fdaweb.com), the AHA asks that FDA declare a shortage of sterile IV solutions, which will permit the use of certain flexibilities not otherwise available to health care providers. It also asks for flexibility to allow hospitals and health systems to prepare and distribute sterile IV solutions in their own pharmacies without restricting them to a one-mile distribution perimeter. Additionally, it requests that the agency identify and approve international manufacturers capable of producing sterile IV solutions, among other actions.
