# Hospitals Suggest Ways to Improve Drug Compounding

The American Hospital Association says there are actions FDA could take to reduce the regulatory burden on hospital and health systems and their patients regarding drug compounding and medical device cyber issues. The association’s comment [letter](http://www.aha.org/advocacy-issues/letter/2017/171207-let-aha-fda-regulation-device-security.pdf?ref=fdaweb.com) recommends: 

- elimination of a provision in a 4/2016 FDA draft guidance that limits distribution of compounded drug products to healthcare facilities located within a one-mile radius of the hospital’s compounding pharmacy;
- FDA provide greater oversight of medical device manufacturers with respect to the security of their products, holding manufacturers accountable to minimize risk and continue updating and patching devices as new intelligence and threats emerge; and
- · FDA proactively set clear measurable expectations for manufacturers before incidents and play a more active role during cybersecurity attacks including, for example, issuing guidance to manufacturers outlining the expectations for supporting their customers to secure their products.
