# ICH Coronavirus Coding

The International Council on Harmonization is issuing a notification to users of the Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities (MedDRA) about existing and new terms for coronavirus concepts. The [document](https://admin.ich.org/sites/default/files/inline-files/ich%5Fm1%5Fptc%5Fwg-msso%5Fcommunication%5Fon%5Fcoronavirus-1%5Fapril%5F2020.pdf?ref=fdaweb.com) says the Covid-19 pandemic “has prompted an urgent need for a harmonized standardized approach to coding and reporting the infection as a global health issue.”

The MedDRA Maintenance and Support Services Organization has already added several coronavirus-related items to MedDRA and is in the process of adding more, the ICH says. The terms can be viewed online [here](https://tools.meddra.org/wbb/?ref=fdaweb.com), but will not become part of the official MedDRA release until MedDRA version 23.1 comes out 9/2020.
