# Icosapent Ethyl Cuts Ichemic Events: Study

A study (REDUCE-IT) funded by Amarin Pharma shows that among patients with elevated triglyceride levels despite use of statins, the risk of ischemic events, including cardiovascular death, is significantly lower among those receiving 2 g of icosapent ethyl twice daily than among those receiving placebo. Researchers from Harvard Medical School and other centers around the world [reported](https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1812792?query=featured%5Fhome&ref=fdaweb.com) the findings in the *New England Journal of Medicine*.

The researchers write that icosapent ethyl is a highly purified and stable EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) ethyl ester that has been shown to lower triglyceride levels and may have anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, plaque-stabilizing, and membrane-stabilizing properties.

In the study, the overall rates of adverse events were similar in the trial groups, the report says.
