# Ileus Added to Ozempic Label Adverse Effects

FDA has approved Novo Nordisk’s labeling changes for Ozempic (semaglutide), a drug indicated to treat Type 2 diabetes that has become popular for weight loss, to add reports of ileus (blocked intestines) following use of the medication. CBS News [reports](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/ozempic-wegovy-possible-side-effect-blocked-intestines-fda-label/?ref=fdaweb.com) that labeling for Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy (semaglutide) and Lilly’s Mounjaro (tirzepatide) also acknowledge reports of ileus.

“Because these reactions are reported voluntarily from a population of uncertain size,” the Ozempic label says, “it is not always possible to reliably estimate their frequency or establish a causal relationship to drug exposure.”

CBS says FDA has received 8,571 reports of gastrointestinal disorders after use of semaglutide drugs through 6/30\. It says ileus is specifically mentioned as a reaction in 33 cases listed on the agency’s dashboard of people taking semaglutide, including two deaths.

Both Novo Nordisk and Lilly are being sued over claims that their medications can cause gastroparesis, the news outlet says.
