# Illumina Cybersecurity Vulnerability is Class 2: FDA

FDA says it has determined that a cybersecurity vulnerability affecting the universal copy service software in several Illumina DNA sequencing instruments is considered a Class 2 recall, a situation in which using the device may cause serious adverse health consequences. An agency [statement](https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/letters-health-care-providers/illumina-cybersecurity-vulnerability-affecting-universal-copy-service-software-may-present-risks?ref=fdaweb.com) says the vulnerability was first announced in a 4/27 [alert](https://www.fdaweb.com/cybersecurity-alert-on-illumina-device-software/). The alert said FDA and Illumina had not received any reports indicating the vulnerability had been exploited. The company said it had developed a software patch to protect against exploitation of the vulnerability.
