FDA says it has received reports of serious adverse events, including patient injury and death, associated with use of implantable infusion pumps in the magnetic resonance (MR) environment. An agency [safety communication](http://www.fda.gov/MedicalDevices/Safety/AlertsandNotices/ucm536518.htm?source=govdelivery&utm%5Fmedium=email&utm%5Fsource=govdelivery) says the reports describe medication dosing inaccuracies such as over- or under-infusion and unintended bolus, and other pump mechanical problems, such as a motor stall and pumps not restarting after an MRI exam.

The communication provides recommended steps to be taken by patients, MRI technologists, radiologists, and other healthcare providers before, during, and after a patient with an implantable infusion pump has an MRI exam.
