# Individuals Accused of Extorting India’s Hetero Drugs

CNBC TV-18, India’s leading business television station, says Cyberabad cyber crime police have arrested two individuals who were accused of running an extortion and cyber-intimidation racket targeting Hetero Drugs. The station [says](https://www.cnbctv18.com/business/companies/cyberabad-police-arrest-two-in-usd-250-million-extortion-bid-targeting-hetero-us-fda-scanner-19766974.htm?ref=fdaweb.com) a Hetero senior employee reported receiving emails demanding a $250 million ransom. Police said the sender claimed to have “confidential” and “damaging” information that would be turned over to the U.S. FDA. According to the report, the accused individuals asserted they could “manage” FDA to trigger regulatory complications and reputational damage.

The police said the accused created fake email identities, impersonated an FDA official, and circulated fabricated documents and screenshots. They also reportedly used the Signal messaging app to demand the ransom.

Hetero told the police the allegations were fabricated, malicious, and intended to coerce the company, the station says.

The report notes the development came weeks after FDA issued two form FDA-483s to the firm’s API (active pharmaceutical ingredient) Unit 9 and its warehouse. The warehouse inspection resulted in six FDA observations, the report says, starting with the fact that access to the facility was not readily provided to the FDA staff.
