# Ivermectin Not Effective in Treating Covid: Study

A [new study](https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2801827?guestAccessKey=5dd7c3ce-e8c9-427f-b7e1-b72287e4d80a&utm%5Fsource=silverchair&utm%5Fmedium=email&utm%5Fcampaign=article%5Falert-jama&utm%5Fterm=mostread&utm%5Fcontent=olf-widget%5F02232023) in *JAMA* that looked at ivermectin as a therapy for treating adult outpatients with mild to moderate Covid-19 finds that the drug’s use is not supported. The study by researchers from Duke, Vanderbilt, and Johns Hopkins, among numerous other institutions, involved 1,200 patients and evaluated whether ivermectin (600 μg/kg daily) for 6 days, compared with placebo, shortened symptom duration.

The researchers found that the median time to sustained recovery was 11 days in the ivermectin group and 11 days in the placebo group. “In this largely vaccinated (84%) population, the posterior probability that ivermectin reduced symptom duration by more than 1 day was less than 0.1%,” they wrote.

During the pandemic, FDA says misinformation circulated that suggested ivermectin was effective in treating Covid-19\. “Currently available data do not show ivermectin is effective against Covid-19,” a [notice on FDA’s Web site](https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/why-you-should-not-use-ivermectin-treat-or-prevent-covid-19?ref=fdaweb.com) says. It warns that taking large doses of ivermectin is dangerous, and if given an ivermectin prescription by health care provider, the patient should have it filled through a legitimate source like a pharmacy.
