# J&J Settles Metal Hip Cases for $1 Billion

Johnson & Johnson’s DePuy unit has agreed to pay about $1 billion total to resolve most of the lawsuits claiming the company sold defective metal-on-metal hip implants that ultimately had to be removed. Bloomberg Technology [reported](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-05-07/j-j-said-to-pay-about-1-billion-to-resolve-pinnacle-hip-suits?ref=fdaweb.com) the agreement would resolve more than 95% of the 6,000 cases in which surgeons removed the firm’s Pinnacle implants because they left patients unable to walk and in pain. The $1 billion includes an earlier settlement for over $400 million. The news service says there are still about 4,500 pending suits by patients with artificial hips that were not made totally of metal or haven’t been surgically removed. It was unclear how many of those suits would be settled.
