# J&J Settles Risperdal Liability Cases for $800 Million

Johnson & Johnson says it has settled substantially all outstanding cases against its Risperdal (risperidone) over personal injury claims that the drug can cause young men to grow breasts. Risperdal is indicated for treating schizophrenia, acute manic or mixed episodes associated with Bipolar I disorder and irritability associated with autism.

In a Security & Exchange Commission 10/29 filing, the company said lawsuits primarily have been filed in state courts in Pennsylvania, California, and Missouri, but other actions are pending in various courts in the U.S. and Canada. “Product liability lawsuits continue to be filed, and the company continues to receive information with respect to potential costs and the anticipated number of cases,” it said. J&J took an $800 million charge related to the settlement, according to the SEC filing.

J&J says it has “successfully defended a number of these cases but there have been verdicts against the company, including a verdict \[[see story](http://fdaweb.com/login.php?sa=v&aid=D5145199&searchWords=risperdal&cate=S&stid=%241%24TY5.gF1.%24ykTssWFkORAZY67n5yC6w%2F&ref=fdaweb.com)\] in 10/2019 of $8.0 billion of punitive damages related to one plaintiff, which the trial judge reduced to $6.8 million in 1/2020.”
