# Jobs Lost if Medical Device Tax Not Repealed: Analysis

A nonpartisan Tax Foundation report issued by AdvaMed says that if the medical device tax continues due to congressional inaction, there will be a loss of 21,390 U.S. medical technology jobs in the next two years and a $1.74 billion decline in the nation’s gross national product. AdvaMed says the [report](https://www.advamed.org/newsroom/press-releases/congressional-inaction-medical-device-tax-will-cost-21390-jobs-next-2-years?ref=fdaweb.com) references the decline of nearly 29,000 industry jobs as well as cuts in research and development spending and device sales when the tax was in effect from 2013 through 2015\. It says those reductions led to less innovation and worse patient care.

“We’ve seen this before and we’re less than a month away from seeing it again if Congress doesn’t act now,” says AdvaMed president **Scott Whitaker**. “This report confirms common sense and illustrates why there’s broad bipartisan consensus in Congress that the medical device tax is bad for jobs, is flawed health and tax policy, and ultimately hurts American patients. We urge Congress to permanently repeal this tax before adjourning this year.”
